Pinterest: Fastest Growing Website in History
By Shannon Kinney
At Dream Local Digital, we’ve received a lot of questions about a new social network called Pinterest. The site recently reached 10 million unique users faster than any other standalone site according to comScore. The site now boasts nearly 12 million unique monthly U.S. visitors, and can be a bit addictive. As we mentioned in the last issue, the site enables users to clip images of things they like. Bookmarking sites like Digg and Delicio.us have been popular for many years, but are text and article based. Pinterest emphasizes pictures over text, and allows users to “pin” images they like and share them with friends by “repinning” across the site or other networks. Not only has the site been the fastest to reach the 10 million mark in history, those users are spending a considerable amount of time on the site. In fact, Facebook and Tumblr are the only social media sites that have more time on site than Pinterest. This is one to watch.Details

Are You Making This Mistake (so, so, social media in 2010)?
by Tobin Slaven
Social media plus mobile plus local search is hot right now. But this post is about what is not so hot!
This is a pet peeve of mine and I see this mistake being played out time and time again in marketing campaigns. It will be your first clue as to whether they (the companies, products, or services) are real users of social media, or if they are just getting their feet wet. Don’t make this overly common mistake – in fact make yourself REMARKABLE by not making this mistake.
So what is this oh so common mistake that is making marketers look like they are social media dinosaurs?Details
Retailers: How Do You Show Your Stuff Without Being Salesy On Social Media?
When it comes to buying habits on the web, search still trumps social because prospective buyers are already searching (with their credit cards ready) for the product or service they want or need. It is like make a quicl run into the grocery store to grab that one loaf of bread and gallon of milk that you need. That is why they call Google “the search engine of intent.”
But Social Networking has proven itself to be the modern day extension of word of mouth advertising. How many times do we ask our friends, “who do you know that…” or “where did you buy that…” to get the referral information we need to make a buying decision? Social is fast becoming the new search when it comes to the discovery and driving of purchase desire, in a way that traditional advertising will never again be able to match. And advertising budgets are following this trend.
So how do you go about getting your wares in front of your target audience?Details
