How to Keep Original, Innovative Content Coming to Your Blog

Best Ways to Keep Your Content Fresh

By Chelsea Sonksen

You know how important it is to have a blog for your business: you’ve seen the numbers, and you know how much traffic it can drive—not to mention how widely it can spread your brand. But the problem is: how do you keep finding new and original content to publish.

Especially if you are a smaller business that specializes in one thing in particular (like accounting for instance), how can you keep the content fresh while continuously updating?

Well, here are a few ways to go about it:

1. Develop a weekly feature

This way your readers know exactly what to expect, and they know they can find the same thing, at the same time, every week. For instance one of my favorite blogs Annie’s Eats just started doing a monthly review of some of her favorite things. Annie’s Eats is a widely read food blog, but once a month she posts links to new clothes, new websites, and new products that she likes that month. These blogs seem to be doing just as well as her well-known food blogs. (Although it is worth noting that Annie built her brand first and then she incorporated other topics.)

But no matter what kind of business you have, it could certainly benefit from having a weekly feature whether that feature is related or not. Maybe every Friday you can post: a fun adventure idea in your area for the weekend. Or you could post your favorite song. Either way, a change up in content once a week will attract a different audience, and you might end up keeping that new audience throughout the other days of the week.

2. Expand to Your Industry

Another idea is to focus on things happening in your industry instead of just in your business. People read blogs to get information, so be the more thorough source of information they can find. Tell them everything going on in your field from events in California to products announced to release in the next month to what celebrities are doing in your field. The more you can establish yourself as the industry resource, the more people you will draw into your audience from around the nation and globe.

3. Use Personalization

And another trick that many business blogs employ is: get personal! The people reading your blog are not just potential customers: they are also just other people looking to be entertained and informed by your writing. So tell them something funny happening in your office.

Do you have a running tally written on the wall of who drinks the most cups of coffee in a day? Post the picture. Does someone have an especially well-decorated office area? Post a photo of that.

Introduce the readers of your blog to the team in your office. Bring us into your professional space. If you can get them to respond to you on a personal level, they are much more likely to respond to you on a business level as well.

Quick recap:

To keep content flowing to your blog (and avoid boring your readers) you can try:
1. A weekly feature of any kind- be creative!
2. Report industry news and information. Be a resource for your readers on everything happening in your field.
3. Get personal. Introduce your readers to your employees, to your office, to your business’ quirks. If they like you, they are much more likely to like your business too.
