Facebook. It is the OG, the one I always fall back on – like that old comfortable sweatshirt you just can’t let go. I can keep up with what is going on and shop my local classifieds in one site, perfection!

My favorite channel is Facebook, simply for the fact that it’s how I’ve met most of my best friends!

Back in the days when social media was a version of the Wild West, and influencer didn’t have the connotation it has today, I had a lot of opportunities to make a bit of money and do things that I wouldn’t have been able to afford as a single parent. One of the coolest things I did was when I was part of a group called “The Yahoo Motherboard.” I flew from New Jersey to California to visit Yahoo’s HQ for a day-long summit and stayed at the Four Seasons! I’m still trying to figure out how I got invited to that one. Another event I was proud to be a part of was #JerseyLove when the group of “Social Media Moms” raised awareness for tourism to New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012.

Facebook mostly, but I’ve been leaning more towards Instagram these days. I like how companies are using it and I enjoy when they get creative. Center for Maine Contemporary Art did a cool thing a while back where they posted several pieces of a single image and when they finished their posts for the series, you’d see the full image. I thought it was really clever.

Facebook- it’s been really helpful to stay in touch with family members out of state. I love being able to share updates about the kids in real time with friends and family.

I’m part of the “original” crew that joined Facebook. Facebook was first designed so that you had to have a “.edu” email address, so it was really targeted towards college students. Then, you could be invited to Facebook if you had a friend with a Facebook account. So, I joined in 2006 when my high schools a year ahead of me graduated, and moved onto college. I loved it then for the ease of being able to stay in contact with out of state friends. Down the road, things changed, and literally, everyone and their mother could join Facebook. But, I still love it!

Instagram! I’ve always been interested in photography, so I love sharing and looking at other people’s photographs.

The drummer from one of my favorite bands and I are friends on Facebook. Eric Idle from Monty Python once responded to one of my Tweets.

The Boston House of Blues reposted my photo from the Catfish and the Bottleman concert I went to.

Instagram is my favorite channel because I love sharing my photography and seeing photos from others around the world who share my interests.

Do you have any fun social media stories to share?
In college, I was obsessed with the TV show Once Upon a Time and I followed a bunch of the actors on Twitter. After I followed one, (Raphael Sbarge) he thanked me for following him and I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Instagram: I enjoy the feeling I get from viewing someone’s profile, it feels like I’m connected to them. Since the content is solely image-based, you rely on more than words to tell your story.

Instagram, I’ve always been a visual person and Instagram is the perfect amount of visual stimulation without annoyance from things I don’t want to see.

When I was about 12 or 13 in 2003, my sister made a Facebook account. At the time, Facebook was brand new and Myspace was still king. I remember thinking “this Facebook thing is so lame” and refusing to make an account. Little did I know sixteen years later, Facebook would be why I had a job. I think I finally broke down and joined in 2008, at least that’s when my first profile picture is from.

Instagram: I would say I post more on Instagram because I love taking pictures. It is a great way to update people on what I’m doing without having to write a huge post. A picture is worth a thousand words, right?

Do you have any fun social media stories to share?
In college, I had a bet with one of my friends to see who could get a celebrity to follow them first on Twitter. I would always convince her to tweet Becky Sauerbrunn (U.S Woman’s Olympic gold medalist soccer player) whenever we would hang out. After a few years of her probably being annoyed with us, she direct messaged my friend back because she hadn’t gotten a tweet from us in a while and wanted to make sure we were okay. Long story short my friend ended up getting a signed soccer jersey from her and I lost our bet. Moral of the story is reach out, you never know what will happen.

I enjoy Twitter because I get to keep up with various sectors of tech and finance that interest me. I think twitter especially excels with those two categories. It’s also less personal than other platforms. Being able to tap into different on-goings and events while joining the conversation is another reason I enjoy the platform. Follow me @S1LVA__ and say Hi!

Instagram is by far my favorite channel. Being a creatively-driven person and artist, its image-only platform is perfect for sharing artwork and networking with other artists. I also use it as my main social media platform to drive sales for my Etsy business!

Favorite Social Media Channel –
This is a hard one for me because I love them for different reasons. I love Facebook for Facebook memories and use it as my lifestream, way to keep in touch with family and friends from afar. Instagram is where I gain inspiration and share more personal favorite moments. I love Twitter for conferences and events especially and to some extent industry news, and LinkedIn is my go-to for work. I use others, but those four are in heavy rotation with me.

Do you have any fun social media stories to share?
I have found people from all facets of my life, going back to grade school, through Facebook – and in one case because she knew what I looked like, a childhood friend I hadn’t seen since fourth grade spoke to me at a restaurant in Portland, ME. I’ve been at concerts and found people I knew there because of Swarm or Snap. I’ve bought a laptop from Dell when they responded to a tweet I sent to my followers (not them) looking for recommendations, and so many more stories. Probably the best one was that I was stuck on the tarmac on a plane for three hours with no word on when the plane would take off or what was happening. I tweeted the airline (which shall remain unnamed) “At least you could bring out the drink cart!”. Not being overly critical, but serious that we could all use some refreshment (and attitude adjustment frankly). When we were taken back to the gate and deplaned, someone from the airline had seen the tweet, likely looked up my follower count on Twitter and my mileage/status, and they were waiting for me at the gate with a beer for me. And best, they didn’t have a sign with my name on it, they knew exactly who I was. Cheers to them for surprising and delighting me!

I was in first 100 users of FB in 2006 when it came out of colleges, in first 150 of Twitter, first 500 on LinkedIn in 2002. In 1999 I bought a book with one click on my mobile device on a text-only version of Amazon.

Pinterest is my favorite ‘social’ channel. I don’t use other social media platforms and love the visual aspect of Pinterest. No other channel allows you to save other people’s images to create boards you can later use to plan your next shopping spree, home decor, or to find the next book to read. My daughter, who is 4, also loves Pinterest because it’s full of funny animal videos!

Do you have any fun social media stories to share?
I use Pinterest in my daughters nighttime routine – which probably sounds strange so let me explain! As mentioned above, she loves to watch funny animal videos and Pinterest makes it easy to do a fast search – and find a huge feed of these. So, after she is snuggled into bed and we read a nighttime story, we pull out my phone and she gets to choose 5 funny animal videos to watch before I kiss her goodnight and she goes to bed. This allows me to feel good knowing that with all the bad in the world, she can go to sleep with her last memory being her and me laughing together and something funny on her mind.

Instagram has been my favorite social channel for a long time. When it felt like other social sites were adding more “rules,” Instagram just stayed fun and simple. Facebook has become the place where my family stays in touch, Instagram is where I get to vacation plan, meet new people, and live aspirationally.

Do you have any fun social media stories to share?
In 2009, I was in a band and we used the early days of social media to feverishly promote ourselves. We got a little attention from a clothing company that supported bands that we idolized in our genre, and I remember waking up one morning to a tweet from the drummer of a band called Mayday Parade (that we were HUGE fans of) saying that he liked our band. It was a surreal moment.

Instagram! I love photography and it makes me happy to scroll through and see so many creative images.   I am a very visual person and love how just looking at an image can be inspiring or speak to you in whatever emotion you are feeling at that moment.

Snapchat! I am the only sibling (of 5) that has moved away from our hometown. It is such an easy and convenient way for me to stay in touch with my family members. I receive images or videos of my nephews without my sister haven’t to post to social media for everyone to see, or send via text message. I also love the group aspect of Snapchat. We have a family group Snapchat and it makes me feel involved even though I’m hundreds of miles away.
