Make Gift Buying Easy This Year By Shopping… on Facebook?

Facebook Explores Holiday Shopping Features

by Alyssa McCluskey

Online shopping this holiday season just got easier.  Last night, Facebook announced that the Facebook Gifts app is now available to tens of millions of users.

The list continues to grow constantly, but retail partners who are on board with this new Facebook app include babyGap, Fab.com, Brookstone, Dean & Deluca, L’Occitane, Lindt, ProFlowers, Random House Inc., and NARS Cosmetics.  Subscriptions are also available; now Facebook users can give online services like Hulu Plus, Pandora, and Rdio subscriptions to friends… all from the most popular social network in the world.

This is a positive turn for Facebook revenue, which recently saw major falls in their stock.  Facebook Gifts are considered low-risk for the company; Facebook partners will handle e-commerce transactions, stock, product availability, and any e-commerce issues.  Facebook will be responsible for ensuring that the technical aspects of the application work smoothly.

The app will be available not only on desktop and laptop computers, but also on mobile devices, giving Facebook users the opportunity to shop on the go as well as at home.  This makes birthday and holiday shopping even easier… And we thought we were spoiled with good-ol’-fashioned online shopping!

According to EMarketer, online shoppers in the United States will spend $54.47 billion this holiday season, which is about 16.8% more than last year.  With the introduction of Facebook Gifts, do you think online shoppers will spend more than the prediction?  I guess we’ll find out soon…
